Six garden centres across the Weald of Kent, from Maidstone to Ashford and Pembury - compared on plant guarantees, own-grown stock and what each actually carries.
Garden Centres Near Maidstone, Ashford & Tunbridge Wells

Six garden centres spread across the Weald of Kent, from Maidstone down to Ashford and west to Pembury. It is a wider area than most of our groups — you would not visit two of these in a morning unless they were close together — but it is coherent in a way that matters: these are the centres a gardener in mid-Kent actually chooses between, and they differ more from each other than the towns do.

Two are Notcutts, one is a Coolings, one is the founding centre of the Grovewell group, one is a Longacres, and one is a genuine independent grower in the lanes. That spread means the right answer depends almost entirely on what you want from the trip.

Quick picks

  • A plant guarantee that means something — either Notcutts Maidstone or Notcutts Tunbridge Wells, both carrying a lifetime hardy plant guarantee.
  • Own-grown plants — Grafty Garden Centre, a grower-retailer in the Weald, or Coolings Potted Garden at Bearsted.
  • Landscaping materials as well as plants — Longacres Bybrook Barn at Ashford, which carries aggregates, timber and fencing.
  • Ponds and fish — Longacres Bybrook Barn, or Tenterden, which has a dedicated aquatic centre.
  • After work — Longacres Bybrook Barn, open until 8pm on Thursdays.
  • Bringing a dog — Grafty and Coolings Potted Garden both welcome them outdoors.

How the area breaks up

Maidstone anchors the north of this group, with Notcutts at Newnham Court and Coolings Potted Garden a few minutes east at Bearsted. The M20 runs south-east from there to Ashford and Longacres at Junction 9. South-west, the A21 carries Notcutts Tunbridge Wells at Pembury. And out in the middle, in the lanes between Headcorn and Grafty Green, sits the one centre here that grows a good deal of what it sells.

A note on sourcing. The Kent listings on this site do not use public rating data, so this guide describes what each centre offers from the businesses’ own published information rather than summarising reviews. You will not find “reviewers report” caveats here as you would in our Essex guides. That is a difference in evidence, not a judgement about the centres, and we would rather be clear about it than imply a consistency we do not have.

Maidstone

Notcutts Maidstone Garden Centre

A full-service centre at Newnham Court, part of a group established in 1897, with a comprehensive plant range across bedding, perennials, shrubs, climbers, trees and houseplants. The feature worth planning around is the lifetime hardy plant guarantee — that changes the arithmetic on an expensive shrub or tree, because a specimen that fails in its first winter is not simply money lost. Keep the receipt. The pet and wild bird section is one of the better ranges in the county, which matters more than it sounds if you feed birds through winter and are tired of supermarket seed. There is a restaurant on site, and it sits inside Newnham Court Shopping Village, so the trip can cover other errands. Open seven days.

Coolings Potted Garden Nursery

At Bearsted, part of the award-winning Coolings group, which grows over 65% of its plants across its centres — and a high proportion of what is sold here is grown on site. That is the reason to choose it over a larger retailer: locally grown stock has been raised in the conditions it will be planted into, which is a real advantage in a county with as much variation as Kent. The plant range covers perennials, bedding, shrubs, trees and houseplants, with a practical, well-stocked sundries selection alongside. The Jasmine Tea Room serves toasted sandwiches, teas and cakes. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas, and there is free parking on the Ashford Road. Open seven days.

The Weald and the Marsh

Grafty Garden Centre

The independent of the group, family run, out in the Weald between Headcorn and Grafty Green — and a genuine grower-retailer, raising many of its own plants on site. If you care where your plants came from, this is the one to go to. It is a rural destination rather than a convenient stop, so treat the drive as part of the point rather than an inconvenience. The range covers seasonal stock, sundries, composts, tools and pots, with garden furniture and planters suited to a country garden. There is an on-site tea room. Dogs are welcome. Free parking on the Headcorn Road. As an independent rural centre, hours vary seasonally, so check before setting out.

Tenterden Garden Centre

The founding centre of the Grovewell group, established on this site in 1999, a GCA member, with views over Romney Marsh. It carries a five-year plant guarantee, which is the second-best guarantee in this group after the two Notcutts. Three things distinguish it: a dedicated garden furniture showroom covering weave, rattan and cast aluminium, which is a better way to buy furniture than from a car park display; a dedicated aquatic centre with pond and water garden products and fish livestock; and a café and restaurant doing freshly prepared breakfasts and lunches that has become a local destination in its own right. There is a well-stocked gift shop and a full sundries range including wild bird care.

Longacres Bybrook Barn

A large independent at Ashford, just off M20 Junction 9, part of the family-run Longacres group — and the most practically useful centre in this group if you are doing work rather than shopping. Alongside a comprehensive plant range it carries aggregates, timber, fencing, stoneware and hard landscaping materials, which means a project that would otherwise need a builders’ merchant as well as a garden centre can be done in one stop. The aquatics section has been fully rebuilt and is among the most substantial in the area, with fish, reptiles and tanks. There is a restaurant on site. Two scheduling points: Thursday late opening runs until 8pm, and Sunday tills open from 10:30am under Sunday trading rules.

Notcutts Tunbridge Wells Garden Centre

At Pembury on the A21, convenient for Tonbridge and Sevenoaks as well as Tunbridge Wells, and carrying the same Notcutts offer as Maidstone — the full plant range with the lifetime hardy plant guarantee, a comprehensive wild bird and pet section, garden furniture, barbecues and fire pits, and homewares and gifts. There is a café or restaurant on site. Free parking on the A21 Tonbridge Road. If you are choosing between the two Notcutts branches, the practical difference is location rather than range: Maidstone sits within a shopping village, this one does not. Open seven days.

Practical notes for this area

The plant guarantees are the most useful thing on this page. Notcutts’ lifetime hardy plant guarantee and Tenterden’s five-year guarantee are genuine differences between these centres and most others. They apply to hardy plants, not to bedding, and they need the receipt — so if you are buying a tree, a specimen shrub or a hedge, it is worth knowing which of these you bought it from.

Own-grown against bought-in is the other real split. Grafty and Coolings Potted Garden both raise a good proportion of their own stock. The two Notcutts and Longacres are buying at scale from growers. Neither approach is wrong — scale buys you range and guarantees, growing buys you plants acclimatised to local conditions and staff who watched them grow.

One centre covers hard landscaping. If your project involves fence posts, gravel or timber as well as plants, Longacres Bybrook Barn saves you a second trip to a merchant. None of the others carry it.

Seasonal note, September 2026: autumn into early winter is the right window for planting trees, shrubs and hedging, which is exactly when the guarantees are worth having. Bare-root stock is generally available from around November to March and is much cheaper than containerised for hedging runs. Aquatics work is better done now than in midwinter — ponds are easier to plant and net while the water is still warm. Christmas ranges typically appear from November.
