UK Plant Nurseries Directory

A plant nursery grows what it sells. That single difference is why a good nursery will usually carry far more varieties of a particular plant than a general garden centre, often at better prices — particularly for hedging, trees and anything bought in quantity.

This page lists 76 nurseries, planteries and specialist growers from our directory of 192 UK listings. If you are weighing up which you need, our guide to garden centres versus plant nurseries explains what each does better.

Before you visit a nursery

Nurseries do not always operate like shops, and this catches people out more than anything else:

  • Hours can be restricted or seasonal. Some open only at weekends, some close through the quietest winter weeks, and a few trade by appointment.
  • Some are wholesale or trade-focused. Many welcome retail visitors, but not all — check before travelling.
  • Facilities are usually minimal. A café, card payment or accessible parking cannot be assumed.
  • Addresses can be approximate. Rural postcodes cover a wide area and will not always bring you to the gate.

When to buy from a nursery

Roughly November to March is bare-root season — hedging, roses, fruit trees and many shrubs are lifted dormant and sold without pots. It is considerably cheaper than container-grown stock and the plants generally establish better. Most garden centres carry little or no bare-root, so this is where a nursery earns its keep.

Late summer and autumn suit perennial buying, with well-grown stock at sensible prices and a full season for roots to establish before growth starts.
