Kent calls itself the Garden of England, and its garden centres largely earn it. Eighteen are listed in our directory, from a 1966 family nursery at Whitstable to a bonsai and exotics specialist on the Isle of Sheppey. This guide picks out which is worth the drive, and for what.
The best-rated in the county
- Meadow Grange Nursery, Whitstable — 4.7 across 980 reviews. Family run since 1966 on a five-acre site, with an on-site café and farm shop. HTA member. The strongest all-round rating of any sizeable Kent centre.
- Vincent Nurseries, Herne Bay — 4.7 across 562 reviews. A family-run independent plant specialist and Herne Bay’s local nursery.
- Stones Garden Centre, Sheerness — 4.6 across 861 reviews, and the most distinctive on this list. Bonsai and exotic plant specialists, with tree ferns and topiary, out on the Isle of Sheppey.
- The Secret Garden Centre, Birchington — 4.6 across 293 reviews, set in a Victorian walled garden. Outdoor plants, houseplants and edibles.
Best for specialists
Kent is unusually well served for growers who do one thing properly.
- Coastal and chalk planting — East Northdown Nursery, Margate. Twenty-five years specialising in plants that will actually survive chalk soil and coastal wind, which is precisely the problem most of north-east Kent has. Café on site.
- Bonsai, tree ferns and exotics — Stones, Sheerness.
- Roses and shrubs — Archers Low Nursery, Sandwich. Competitively priced and the local nursery for the town.
- Orchids — Polhill Garden Centre, Badgers Mount, has a dedicated Orchid House, plus a farm shop and a programme of events and courses. Handy for M25 Junction 4.
- Own-grown stock — Coolings The Gardener’s Garden Centre, Knockholt, grows around 65% of what it sells. Award-winning, GCA member and employee-owned.
If a plant guarantee matters to you
This is where Kent genuinely differs from most counties, and it is worth knowing before you spend serious money on shrubs or trees.
- Lifetime plant guarantee — Notcutts Maidstone and Notcutts Tunbridge Wells. The group has been trading since 1897.
- Five-year plant guarantee — Tenterden Garden Centre and Canterbury Garden Centre, both Grovewell centres and GCA members.
Always read the terms — guarantees usually require your receipt and reasonable aftercare — but a five-year or lifetime guarantee is a meaningful difference on an expensive specimen.
Best for a day out
- Longacres Bybrook Barn, Ashford — a large family-run independent with an aquatics section and a restaurant, right by M20 Junction 9. Thursday late opening.
- Polhill, Badgers Mount — farm shop, Orchid House and courses, on the North Downs.
- Coolings Potted Garden Nursery, Bearsted — the Jasmine Tea Room, and stock from local growers.
- Youngs Nurseries, Broadstairs — family-run across two locations, with a café, an aquatic section and an online shop.
Where to look by area
- Thanet and the north-east coast — East Northdown at Margate, The Secret Garden Centre at Birchington, Youngs at Broadstairs. Between them they cover coastal conditions better than anywhere else in the county.
- Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay — the densest cluster: Meadow Grange, Vincent Nurseries, Canterbury Garden Centre and Canterbury Chartham.
- Maidstone and the Weald — Notcutts Maidstone, Coolings at Bearsted, Grafty Garden Centre out in rural Kent, and Tenterden to the south.
- North Kent and the M25 edge — Polhill at Badgers Mount, Coolings at Knockholt, Millbrook at Gravesend.
- Ashford and the south — Longacres Bybrook Barn, and Tenterden.
Before you go
- Hours change with the season, and small nurseries close for parts of the year. Call before a long journey.
- Coastal Kent has real growing constraints. If you garden on chalk or in salt wind, buy from somewhere that grows for those conditions rather than a general centre.
- Check the guarantee terms if you are buying an expensive plant. They vary from nothing at all to lifetime.
- Several of these are group centres — Notcutts, Grovewell, Coolings, Blue Diamond at Canterbury Chartham. That usually means better facilities and guarantees, and less unusual stock than an independent grower.
How this guide was put together
Every business named here has a full listing in our Kent directory, built from verified address and contact data with opening hours cross-checked between sources. Ratings and review counts were correct when the listings were compiled and drift over time. Kent coverage is still growing — if we are missing somewhere, tell us.
