Berkshire has fourteen garden centres and nurseries in our directory, and they are a genuinely mixed bag — a 4.9-rated independent on a Maidenhead estate, a “garden village” with forty retailers and a falconry centre, and a specimen-plant nursery that won a national landscaping award. This guide sorts them by what they are actually good for.
The highest-rated
- Stubbings Nursery, Maidenhead — 4.9 across 600+ reviews, the best-rated garden business in the county by a clear margin. An independent nursery in an estate setting with a café on site and a loyalty scheme.
- The Big Plant Nursery, Twyford — 4.7 across 400+. Specialist large and specimen plants, a BALI Award winner in 2025 and an HTA member. The place to go when you need something substantial rather than something cheap.
- Moss End Garden Village, Warfield — 4.4 across 500+, and the most unusual entry here: forty-plus independent retailers, an arts and crafts offer and a falconry centre alongside the plants.
- Thatcham Garden Centre — 4.4 across 1,100+, a British Garden Centres site with the Gardener’s Retreat restaurant and soft play.
Best for a family day out
- Moss End Garden Village, Warfield — closer to a small retail village than a garden centre, with a falconry centre. If you have people with you who do not care about plants, this is the one.
- Thatcham and Dobbies Hare Hatch both have soft play and full restaurants.
- Hare Hatch Sheeplands — an independent combining a farm shop, garden centre, café and an antiques emporium. Also does turf.
- Squire’s Wokingham — café bar and food hall, part of the Squire’s family chain.
Best for the plants themselves
- Penwood Nurseries, near Newbury — a family-run specialist in hardy plants, with stock grown on site. Small, and the better for it.
- The Big Plant Nursery, Twyford — specimen and large plants, award-winning.
- Oaktree Garden Centre, Warfield — an award-winning nursery with 2,100+ reviews, the most-reviewed garden business in Berkshire.
- Henry Street Garden Centre, Arborfield — a long-standing independent with a restaurant and a reward card, 4.3 across 900+.
The chains, and what they offer
Berkshire has more chain representation than most counties we cover, which is not a criticism — chains tend to mean better facilities, longer hours and plant guarantees.
- Hillier — Aldermaston (Mulberry & Thyme restaurant) and Newbury, both with large plant areas and restaurants.
- British Garden Centres — Thatcham.
- Dobbies — Hare Hatch.
- Squire’s — Wokingham.
- The Garden Centre Group — Windsor, handy if you are in the town already.
Where to look by area
- East Berkshire and the Thames — Stubbings at Maidenhead, Windsor, and the Hare Hatch pair. The strongest cluster in the county.
- Wokingham and Bracknell — Squire’s and Ashridge Manor at Wokingham, Oaktree and Moss End at Warfield, Henry Street at Arborfield.
- West Berkshire — Penwood near Newbury, Hillier at Newbury and Aldermaston, and Thatcham.
- Twyford — The Big Plant Nursery, worth a special trip for specimen stock.
Before you go
- Hours change seasonally, and small independents work to the growing year. Call before a long journey.
- Two very different Hare Hatch sites sit close together — Hare Hatch Sheeplands (independent, farm shop, antiques) and Dobbies (national chain). Check which you are heading for.
- For large specimen plants, ring ahead. Stock of big material moves and is worth reserving.
- Chain centres usually carry plant guarantees. Independents often do not, but frequently grow better stock. Ask either way.
How this guide was put together
Every business named here has a full listing in our Berkshire directory, built from verified address and contact data with opening hours cross-checked between sources. Ratings and review counts were correct when the listings were compiled and drift over time. If we are missing somewhere, tell us.
