Garden centres in London are harder to find than you might expect — and the ones that exist are not all the same type of place. North London has the strongest cluster, centred around Crews Hill and Enfield. West London has the most reliable full-service options. East London leans towards specialist shops and edge-of-city independents. And Richmond has an outlier that does not fit neatly into any category.
This guide covers all 14 verified and active garden centre listings in the London directory. Two important distinctions before you read on.
Plant World London, Poplar is a specialist indoor plant shop — it does not stock outdoor plants, garden furniture, compost or tools. It is excellent for what it does, but it is not a garden centre in the conventional sense. Petersham Nurseries, Richmond is a premium plant nursery with a restaurant attached. The price point, the atmosphere and the expectation are different from a standard garden centre visit. Both are worth knowing about — but treat them as distinct categories.

North London: Enfield, Crews Hill, Mill Hill and Bounds Green
North London accounts for five of the 14 active listings and is the most productive area for a traditional garden centre visit. The Enfield and Crews Hill area has built a reputation as a destination for plant buying — visitors travel from across North and North-East London specifically for it.
For full detail on all five listings in this area, see the North London garden centres guide.
Thompsons Garden Centre, Crews Hill
Thompsons is an independent in the Crews Hill garden centre cluster. It is not a chain, which means the range and character reflect local decisions rather than a national formula. Visitors come from Enfield, Potters Bar, Barnet and further out — the Crews Hill location has enough gravity as a destination to justify the journey from a wide catchment area.
Better suited to: traditional garden centre visits, a Crews Hill destination trip, North London visitors. Less suited to: specialist plant hunting or a quick local stop.
Sunshine Garden Centre, Bounds Green
Sunshine is a GCA member — independently assessed, not self-reported. For visitors in Wood Green, Palmers Green, Muswell Hill and surrounding N-postcode areas, it is the closest full independent garden centre option in the directory. The GCA status is a meaningful indicator: it reflects a consistent standard across the season rather than a one-off good review.
Better suited to: North London independent garden centre visits, GCA-quality assurance. Less suited to: a full destination day trip.
Finchley Nurseries, Mill Hill
Established in 1929. That is nearly a century of operation from a single site, and it means something. Finchley Nurseries is a family-run independent nursery, not a full garden centre — there is no café, no homeware section, no gift department. The focus is plants and horticultural knowledge. For visitors in Mill Hill, Barnet and Hendon who want exactly that, it is hard to argue with a hundred-year track record.
Better suited to: plant buying, specialist advice, Mill Hill and Barnet area. Less suited to: café stops, gifts, or large retail garden centre shopping.
Clockhouse Nursery, Enfield
A local independent nursery in Enfield. Useful for Enfield-area plant buying without making the trip to Crews Hill. It is a plant-buying option rather than a full garden centre experience — no café, no broad retail range. Worth knowing about as part of the local Enfield picture.
Better suited to: Enfield area plant buying, local independent. Less suited to: a destination day out.
Glebe Nursery, Enfield
Located at Forty Hill in Enfield, Glebe has the highest Google rating of any listing in the North London area. It is dog-friendly and described by visitors as a well-curated specialist nursery. There is one important caveat.
Seasonal operation: Glebe Nursery is not open year-round. It typically opens mid-to-late March, depending on conditions. Visiting outside that window will result in a closed gate. Always check dates and current status before making the trip.
Better suited to: specialist plants, dog-friendly visits, Enfield area in season. Not suited to: year-round casual visits without checking first.
East London and the Essex Border: Woodford Green, Ilford, Poplar and Romford
East London has four listings in the directory. They are more varied in type than the North London cluster — and two of them require a different set of expectations than a standard garden centre visit.
For more on each listing, see the East London garden centres guide.
Redbridge Garden Centre, Woodford Green
The most conventional full garden centre option in the East London listings. An independent in Woodford Green, near the Essex border. For visitors in Wanstead, South Woodford and Redbridge who want a proper independent rather than a chain, Redbridge is the natural starting point in this area.
Better suited to: Woodford Green and Essex-border area, independent garden centre. Less suited to: specialist plant hunting.
Forest Road Garden Centre, Ilford
Also known as Forest Farm Shop. The combined identity is intentional — this site runs a working farm shop alongside garden centre retail. Fresh produce and plants in the same visit. It is an unusual combination in a London context, and if that is what you want, it is not something most garden centres in the directory offer.
Better suited to: Hainault and Ilford area, combined farm shop and garden centre visit. Less suited to: a traditional standalone garden centre experience.
Plant World London, Poplar
A specialist indoor and houseplant shop in Poplar (E14). This is not a garden centre and should not be expected to work as one. There are no outdoor plants, no compost bags, no garden furniture, no café. What there is: a well-curated, regularly refreshed range of indoor and tropical plants, well-presented and suited to the E14 and Canary Wharf area.
Editor note: Plant World London is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays — it operates Wednesday to Sunday. Confirm hours before travelling. If outdoor plants are what you need, this is the wrong listing.
Better suited to: indoor/houseplant buying, Tower Hamlets and E14 area, gifts. Not suited to: outdoor plant shopping or conventional garden centre visits.
Garden Living, Romford
A garden centre and florist in Romford. The combination covers plant retail and floristry from the same site — useful if you want both in a single visit. Accessible from Romford, Hornchurch and the surrounding RM postcode area.
Note: There is no verified official website for Garden Living at the time of writing. Listing information is sourced from verified third-party directories. Confirm opening hours directly before visiting.
Better suited to: Romford area, combined garden and floristry visit. Less suited to: advance online research.
West London and Richmond: Ruislip, Pinner, Harrow, Stanmore and Petersham
West London has the strongest concentration of full garden centres in the directory. Hillier at Ruislip, Squire’s at Stanmore and Harrow Garden Centre each offer the infrastructure of a proper full-service visit. Petersham Nurseries in Richmond is a different proposition entirely.
For more detail, see the West London & Richmond garden centres guide.
Hillier Garden Centre, Ruislip
Hillier is one of the better-regarded garden centre groups in the UK — a brand with a long history and consistent quality across its sites. The Ruislip branch is the West London option in the directory. For visitors in Ruislip, Uxbridge and the surrounding HA4 area who want a dependable full garden centre visit, this is the clearest choice.
Better suited to: full garden centre day out, Ruislip and Uxbridge area, Hillier plant range. Less suited to: specialist or unusual plant varieties.
Squire’s Garden Centre, Stanmore
Squire’s is an independently owned group with a reputation that consistently sits above the chain average. The Stanmore branch holds GCA membership. For visitors in Stanmore, Edgware and the HA7–HA8 area, it is a strong full garden centre option — a proper café, quality seasonal ranges, and the kind of offer that rewards a planned visit.
Better suited to: full garden centre day out, Stanmore and Edgware area, GCA-quality assurance, café. Less suited to: specialist nursery plant hunting.
Harrow Garden Centre, Harrow
Part of the British Garden Centres group. On Headstone Lane in Harrow, accessible from Harrow, Wealdstone and the surrounding HA1–HA3 postcodes. A chain site, which means reliable hours, consistent range and the structure of a larger group behind it. The right choice for Harrow-area visitors who want a dependable visit without the uncertainty of smaller independents.
Better suited to: Harrow area, chain reliability, consistent range. Less suited to: distinctive independent feel.
Haste Hill Nursery, Pinner
A local independent nursery in Pinner. Plant-buying focus, not a full garden centre. No verified official website at the time of writing — confirm hours directly before visiting. The right option for Pinner and Northwood area visitors who want a local independent rather than a chain.
Better suited to: Pinner area local plant buying, local independent. Less suited to: destination visits or café stops.
Petersham Nurseries, Richmond
Petersham Nurseries does not belong in the same comparison as any other listing in this guide. It is a premium plant nursery set in a walled garden off Church Lane in Petersham, with an attached restaurant that has its own following and culinary recognition. The atmosphere is unhurried, the plant range carefully curated rather than broadly comprehensive, and the prices reflect all of this.
Closed Mondays. This is a consistent closure — plan around it.
Editor note: Petersham rewards planning. Parking is limited off Church Lane. The restaurant benefits from a booking. The experience is best taken without rushing. If you want a bag of compost and a tray of bedding plants, Hillier Ruislip or Squire’s Stanmore are the more useful comparison. If you want something that feels genuinely different and are treating it as a destination, Petersham is one of the more distinctive garden visits London offers.
Better suited to: premium plant buying, a distinctive London visit, restaurant, a planned afternoon. Not suited to: budget shopping, quick plant runs, or standard garden centre expectations.
Practical Notes
London garden centres are spread across the city rather than clustered in one area. There is no single corridor equivalent to the Crews Hill stretch — each visit requires its own journey planning. Combining two listings in one trip is possible in some areas (Ruislip and Stanmore are not far apart; Clockhouse and Thompsons are both Enfield-adjacent) but not always worth the extra travel.
Smaller independents — Haste Hill, Clockhouse, Garden Living — operate on shorter windows than chain sites or larger independents. Always check hours before travelling. Plant World London is closed Monday and Tuesday. Glebe Nursery is only open from mid-to-late March onwards depending on the season.
