UK Garden Centre Opening Times: What You Need to Know (Including Sundays)

Sunday Trading laws, seasonal hour changes, bank holidays — here's the honest guide to when UK garden centres are actually open.

You’d think it would be simple. Garden centre, opening times, done. But anyone who’s arrived at a closed gate on a bank holiday Monday, or turned up at 9am on a Sunday and found they’re not letting anyone in until 10, knows it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Here’s what you actually need to know about when UK garden centres are open — and when they’re not.

Standard weekday and Saturday hours

Most UK garden centres open somewhere between 8:30am and 9:30am on weekdays and Saturdays, and close between 5:30pm and 6:30pm. The big national chains — Dobbies, Wyevale (now operating as independent centres), Squire’s, Hillier — tend to be consistent about this. Independent nurseries vary more, and some have a half-day on Mondays or Wednesdays, particularly outside the spring and summer peak season.

If you’re making a special trip for something specific, it’s always worth checking the individual centre’s listing or ringing ahead. Not because they’re likely to be closed — but because knowing they’re open until 5 rather than 6 can matter when you’re on the way back from somewhere else.

Sunday hours and the Sunday Trading Act

This is where it gets more specific. Under the Sunday Trading Act 1994, large shops in England and Wales — defined as those over 280 square metres (roughly 3,000 square feet) — can only open for a maximum of six consecutive hours between 10am and 6pm on Sundays.

In practice, most large garden centres open from 10:30am or 11am and close at 4pm or 5pm on Sundays. Smaller independent nurseries are exempt from this restriction entirely and can set their own Sunday hours.

Scotland and Northern Ireland operate under different legislation, so garden centres there may have slightly different Sunday hours — though in practice, similar patterns apply.

Bank holidays

Bank holidays are a mixed picture. Easter and the early May bank holiday are genuinely busy times for garden centres, and most open on bank holiday Mondays — often with standard Sunday-style reduced hours. Good Friday can catch people out, as some centres treat it as a Sunday and open late, while others open as normal.

Christmas and Boxing Day are typically closed. The days between Christmas and New Year vary — some centres are open with skeleton staff for last-minute gift items; others close entirely until January.

Seasonal hour changes

Spring is peak season. From late February through to the end of June, many garden centres extend their hours slightly — sometimes staying open until 7pm or 7:30pm on summer weekday evenings. This is particularly common in garden centres with a café, where evening trade in good weather can be significant.

From October onwards, hours generally contract. The emphasis shifts to Christmas stock, and there’s less reason to stay open late. Winter hours from November to February are often the shortest of the year.

How to check before you go

The easiest thing is to use the allgardencentres.co.uk directory, which lists opening hours for garden centres across the UK. You can search by your postcode or town, find centres nearby, and check their hours before making the journey.

If hours aren’t listed or you want to confirm for a specific date — particularly bank holidays — a quick phone call takes thirty seconds and saves considerably more than that in wasted travel time.
